hanging out with marie antoinette...

tuesday (on our glorious field trip day) we visited the headquarters for the World Food Programme (or simply WFP) and Tirelli costume warehouse.

WORLD FOOD PROGRAMME-
The goal of this branch of the United Nations is to change people's lives through nutrition. Other than design, nutrition is another main interest of mine. I have worked at a health food store on and off for about four years now. This part-time job influenced my diet to be as local and organic as possible. Their goal is to not only feed the hungry people, but also help them learn how to cultivate and sustain agriculture for themselves, which is an important step towards ending "world hunger." A popular staple that is given out in times of emergency is a High Energy Biscuit. This meal requires no cooking, which is convenient during times of disaster when electricity isn't readily available. Another perk of the High Energy Biscuit is that they are fortified with essential vitamins and minerals, which is essential to maintaining proper health.

Food that is given out to hungry people or people recovering from a disaster, either caused by combat or nature, varies by the region. Another goal for The World Food Programme is to provide the suffering people with food they would want to eat. The food is bought locally and micro-nutrient sprinkles are sometimes added. An example of this would be when the Middle East is experiencing turmoil. The World Food Programme can transport fig bars from nearby Egypt because they have similar diets. Something that was stressed was the nutrition of hungry children. When children are infants to five years of age, proper nutrition is very important. When a child does not receive proper nutrients during these developing years, irreversible negative side effects have a greater chance of becoming apparent in later years. Sadly most of these malnourishments are unable to be fixed.

Last week for one of our assignments, we had to play an internet game called "Free Rice." This vocabulary game was initially created in 2007 by a father who wanted to motivate his son to practice his vocabulary. In 2008 rights to the program were granted to The World Food Programme. The player answers questions (English vocabulary, Italian, and even art history are some examples) and for each correct answer ten grains of rice are donated. YUM foods, such as KFC, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut also support World Food Progamme's efforts in feeding the hungry. They are involved with the Free Rice program and buy the grains of rice which have been earned by the player. Next time you are in one of those fast food chains, notice that they usually have a small place set aside for the customer to donate their change.

Today was an informative field trip, it was great getting to learn how this organization is trying to create a world without hunger. I even did my part, in purchasing a FEED bag after the presentation. The bag was a mere 35E, but will feed one child for a year! So maybe I will help a potential marathon runner gain the proper nutrition in their developing years and they can then have a successful athletic career...

(this was posted from my 'school blog' that i have to post as an assignment while i am here. that is why it has proper punctuation.)

Tirelli
this part of the field trip was an unexpected surprise, we had the chance to meet the assistant costume designer to... (drum roll) ... the movie MARIE ANTOINETTE. i got to touch the costume that kirsten dunst's character wears in her (being marie anttoinette) first mass at versailles (it was a light pink dress - in case you want to test my knowledge about the movie). the assistant designer, andrea sorrentino, was very impressed with my marie antoinette movie knowledge. he said that they made around 10,000 costumes for that one movie. WOW! they would down cycle them after a 'main' character wore a creation. after learning about the craftsmanship that went into each outfit his boss deserved the oscar for 'best costume.'

wearing one of the props from the movie.
